Everything that makes up humans is stored in a chip that is implanted in every person in the spine in the neck at the age of one year. Takeshi Kovacs is a soldier whose chip (also called “stack”) was implanted in the body of a disgraced policeman. For the rich and over 900 years old Laurens Bancroft he should find out who killed him. Bancroft makes regular backups of himself, but was shot dead hours before his next backup and now wants to know who’s behind it. Although the police are suicidal, Bancroft does not believe in it. Kovacs should get to the bottom of the truth.
